Weekend Review

In case you missed it (which is a good possibility, considering half of America spent most of their Memorial Day Weekend sitting in traffic on I-90), this weekend provided more sports-related thrills and spills than any other in 2011.

To recap:

Burlington-Edison, Sehome, Lynden, Bellingham, Mount Baker, Anacortes, and Blaine all took home some hardware from the WIAA 2A state championship weekend. The Tiger boys won the coveted state baseball crown by defeating conference rival Sehome 7-0 in the finals.

Western Washington University won the women's NCAA Division II rowing championship for the seventh straight year.

Ohio State University head football coach Jim Tressel resigned late Sunday evening after a tumultuous off season.

And last but not least, New Zealand BMX rider Jed Mildon did this (watch video)! Happy Memorial Day.

PAC-10 ALL CONFERENCE TEAMS

University of Washington senior Mathew Bryan-Amaning was named to this year's Pacific 10 Conference First Team/courtesy The Seattle Times

Two Huskies and a Cougar headline this season's Pacific-10 men's basketball All-Conference teams. Washington Senior Mathew Bryan-Amaning and junior teammate Isaiah Thomas join Washington State's Klay Thompson on the conference first team. WSU's DeAngelo Casto also earned honors, along with the Huskies C..J. Wilcox and Justin Holiday. Arizona's Derrick Williams was named conference player of the year.

Jackson Kirkpatrick One-on-One

I don't have a basketball nickname, but if I did, it would lie somewhere between "the sloth" and "white chocolate." I've got a consistently below average outside game and even more moribund ball handling skills. But for the sake of hard hitting journalism, I recently flashed my hardwood skills against Anacortes Senior stud Jackson Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick (unlike me) is an All-State football and basketball performer, and many wouldn't be surprised to see his name on the baseball ballot later this year as well.

Kirkpatrick earned six Rockfish Grill Player of the Game awards during the basketball season, and in the break between the winter and spring sports season, agreed to a pickup game of ball, one on one. Did You Know?: Kirkpatrick has been selected to play in both the WIAA 2A football and basketball senior games? The Basketball game takes place Sat. March 12. The football tilt is a scheduled for the last full week in June (June 20-25) in Yakima. As part of the week long East-West football event, Kirkpatrick will receive expert coaching, free senior game gear, and room and board. It all comes for a price, however, as each participant is asked to raise $500 through ticket and game day program sales to offset some of the costs. NFL Combine

Jake Locker is currently attending the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, IN. So is this guy.

The National Football League Combine kicks off today in Indianapolis. And it's not just for big shots like former Washington Quarterback Jake Locker. Although Locker is a bonafide top five quarterback prospect, we all know draft stock rises and sinks as fluidly as the tides.
