NCAA Tournament Bracket

As promised here is my official NCAA tournament bracket (and by official, I mean one of the three I filled out). It's no secret, I like San Diego State out West. I think the Aztec's can make a solid push to the Final Four and from there, anything can happen. Also, Jimmer Freddette is not human so don't count the stormin' Mormons out of anything. Sadly, I don't think Washington has what it takes to beat UNC in the second round.

UPDATED (3/23/11)
Today's Tips: Look for Arizona to give Duke a game in the Anaheim, CA Regional. The 'Cats get to play close to home and I'm never sold on the Blue Devils. Besides, Arizona's primary rival is the Sun Devil. So, basically, they known how to beat teams with satonic mascots. With Pitt gone, the door is open for a BYU Final Four Run. Five years from now, kindergarten teachers around the nation will feel the ill effects of the Stormin' Mormon's run through the tourney, as every fourth kid in their class will be named Jimmer.
And even after two close games, I still haven't given up on the San Diego Aztecs. They're doing what they need to do to get to get to the Final Four.

Unfortunately I can't make it any bigger, but as you can see, there is a lot of red on the left side.

Anacortes High School Fastpitch Preview

Anacortes returns seven starters and is a favorite to win the their third consecutive NWC district title. Senior Kayla Riger is seen here sliding into home plate in last year's district championship game. --Courtesy the Skagit Valley Herald

Returners: Sr. Tara Bellusci, Sr. Hannah Brennan, Sr. Madison Bundy, Sr. Kayla Rieger, Sr. Jackie Saunders, Sr. Lauren Ward, Jr. Kelci Douglas, So. Liz Crooks
Newcomers: Jr. Elizabeth Easton, Jr. Haley Stout,

In the 21st century, there are statistics for everything. OBP, WHIP, FG %, YAC, TOP, etc…yet there remains no true way to measure a team or individual's intangibles, a trait that characterizes this year’s Anacortes High School Fastpitch team.
“Experience is a trite word…sometimes it can be overused,” said longtime Anacortes softball coach Tom Swapp. “But it’s not overused with these kids.”
The Hawks return seven seniors off a squad that’s placed fifth at the last two state championships and only graduated one player off of last year’s team. Unfortunately for the Hawks, that player was Maria Roney, a perennial all-conference catcher and four year starter. The fact that Roney's replacement, Mattie Foster, moved to Nebraska, leaves the Hawks all the more thin at a critical position.
“We’re going in [to the season] a little less experienced at catcher than we thought we would,” he said, adding that both Haley Stout and Elizabeth Easton could see time at the position.
However, the ‘Hawks should be loaded at almost every other position. They will start returning seniors Hannah Brennan, Jackie Saunders, Tara Bellusci, Kayla Rieger, Madison Bundy, and Lauren Ward as well as two more players—junior Kelci Douglas and sophomore Liz Crooks—with varsity experience. That experience, along with three straight trips to Yakima, should make Anacortes a team to contend with, come state tournament time.
“Believe me, the experience at state tournaments really helps in playing games [in Yakima],” said Swapp. “If we manage to get to state, we should be tough over there.”

Luke’s Starting 9
1) Tara Bellusci CF
2) Kayla Rieger 2B
3) Madison Bundy SS
4) Hannah Brennan 1B
5) Liz Crooks 3B
6) Kelci Douglas RF
7) Jackie Saunders P
8) Haley Stout C
9) Lauren Ward
Bench: Elizabeth Easton C,
Bullpen: Liz Crooks, Kelci Douglas

The Hawks won’t have a ton of options off the bench, but if they can stay healthy, they won’t need any. Bellusci gets the nod over Bundy at the top of the lineup for two simples reasons: Bellusci is faster than Bundy, while Bundy hits for better power. It makes sense to move a faster play up and a stronger player down in the lineup. Reiger is a second leadoff hitter that can do what it takes to move Bellusci over to third, assuming she’s already stolen second base.
Brennan is a great hitter with tremdous power, so it makes sense that she hits in the cleanup spot. She’ll be followed by two more powerfull players in Liz Crooks and Kelci Douglas.
Seniors Saunders and Ward provide some bottom of the lineup ability while protecting newcomers Haley Stout and Elizabeth Easton, both of which will hit near the bottom of the lineup. Ward is a selective hitter, and should see some good pitches hitting in front of Bellusci, Rieger, and Bundy.
The Hawks roster is little thin, but look for a few younger players to work their way onto the bench throughout the season. The Hawks plan on fielding a full JV squad, so the coaching staff will have plenty of looks at up and coming players.
All in all, this may the best team coach Swapp has ever fielded. If the Hawks can play together and avoid injuries, they should have no problem returning to the state tournament. Winning in Yakima, however, is a crapshoot. The Seahawks, like every other team competing at state, will need a good draw and a little luck to make it to the title game.

Anacortes High School Baseball Preview

Anacortes Second Basemen Corey Campbell (#20) leads an Anacortes squad poised to make a run at the state championship photo courtesy Skagit Valley Herald

(To watch the baseball preview video, click here)

Returners: Sr. Corey Campbell, Sr. Jackson Kirkpatrick, Sr. Preston Madden, Sr. Mark Medalia, Sr. Shane Hardesty, Sr. Tyler Hayes, Sr. Jonah Richards, Jr. Cody Culp, Jr. Faris Diemert, Jr. Trevor Monroe, Jr. Marcus Anstensen, So. A.J. Yost, So. Billy King, So. Wesley Lowe
Key Newcomers: So. Tanner McLaughlin, Jr. Cody Phipps

Spirits are high and expectations are soaring for this year’s Anacortes High School baseball team. The Hawks finished each of the past two seasons one game short of a state birth, but with 14 returning letter winners, head coach Pat Swapp thinks this could be his team’s year to shine.
“We’ve got 14 kids returning to our varsity that lettered last year,” said Swapp. “I’m hoping all three (Varsity, JV, and freshmen) of our teams can have successful years.”
The Seahawks are deep in the middle, returning catcher Mark Medalia, pitching ace Cody Culp, second baseman Corey Campbell, center fielder Preston Madden, and converted shortstop Jackson Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick becomes the first Anacortes player not named Darling to start at the position in five years. The position’s in good hand, though, as Kirkpatrick’s already earned all-state accolades during both the football and basketball seasons.
“We’re going to have outstanding athletes in the middle of the infield,” said Swapp, noting the athleticism of mutli-sport Kirkpatrick, Medalia, and Madden, among others. “We’re so blessed to have these outstanding athletes.”
The Seahawks open the season Tue. March 15, at home against Blaine. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm. Listen to the broadcast live on A-M 1340 or online at 1340TheWhale.com. Visit the Whale Homepage for the complete spring broadcast schedule, visit the whale homepage.

Luke's Starting 9
Here’s my take on the Seahawks opening day roster. Using information from both this and last year’s teams, I’ve concocted my own opening day roster. (Editor’s Note: These rosters in no way reflect the coaching staff’s true views or opinions). The Hawks are likely to bat their middle infielders one-two, a combination that led to several first inning runs last season.
Sophomore Billy King’s sweet stroke is too clean to put anywhere else in the lineup. He may not start the season batting third, but even money says that’s where he’ll finish the year.
Look for Slugger Mark Medalia to cut down on his strikeouts this season as he works to compact his swing.
With Cody Culp on the mound, look for the Hawks to DH by committee, with sophomore Wesley Lowe getting the first knock. Culp will man right field when not on the mound, but that opens up an every-other-day position for sophomore A.J. Yost.
The Hawks will likely put feisty hitters Ty Hayes and Preston Madden at the end of the lineup; they’re on-base machines whose sole job will be to get on base for the big hitters at the top of the lineup.
The biggest spring question mark remains at third base, a position Kirkpatrick manned last season. Diemert is likely to split time with fellow junior Trevor Monroe, giving coach Swapp plenty of options around the horn. Another player likely to see time is senior Shane Hardesty, although he’s more suited to relieve Campbell at second.
Jonah Richards gives you a solid arm off the bench, and don’t be surprised if he develops into the number two starter, or even the team’s unofficial closer.

1) Corey Campbell 2B
2) Jackson Kirkpatrick SS
3) Billy King 1B
4) Mark Medalia C
5) Cody Culp P DH—Wesley Lowe
6) A.J. Yost RF
7) Faris Diemert 3B
8) Tyler Hayes LF
9) Preston Madden CF

Bench—Trevor Monroe INF, Marcus Anstenson INF, Shane Hardesty INF, Tanner McLaughlin INF, Cody Phipps U

Jackson Kirkpatrick One-on-One

I don't have a basketball nickname, but if I did, it would lie somewhere between "the sloth" and "white chocolate." I've got a consistently below average outside game and even more moribund ball handling skills. But for the sake of hard hitting journalism, I recently flashed my hardwood skills against Anacortes Senior stud Jackson Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick (unlike me) is an All-State football and basketball performer, and many wouldn't be surprised to see his name on the baseball ballot later this year as well.

Kirkpatrick earned six Rockfish Grill Player of the Game awards during the basketball season, and in the break between the winter and spring sports season, agreed to a pickup game of ball, one on one. Click here to watch the video online at The Whale Homepage. Scroll below the break to learn a little more about Jackson Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick, seen here showing off his receiving skills, is both an all state football and basketball selection

Jackson Kirkpatrick

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 160 lbs

Vertical: 31"

Favorite soft drink: "Simply Orange" Orange Juice

Favorite TV Show: Tosh.0

Did You Know?: Kirkpatrick has been selected to play in both the WIAA 2A football and basketball senior games? The Basketball game takes place Sat. March 12. The football tilt is a scheduled for the last full week in June (June 20-25) in Yakima. As part of the week long East-West football event, Kirkpatrick will receive expert coaching, free senior game gear, and room and board. It all comes for a price, however, as each participant is asked to raise $500 through ticket and game day program sales to offset some of the costs. If you're interested in attending the game, or wish to help Jackson make it to Yakima, contact:

Bill Evans, Anacortes High School Football Coach: (360) 941-4510 or

Carol Kirkpatrick: (360) 293-2166 ext. 2

Special Thanks to Jackson Kirkpatrick both his time and humility (I think he could have beat me 11-0) and to the Anacortes High School administration (for letting us use the gym after hours).

The play is getting a ton of national love, and was featured on ESPN's "Top Plays."

Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament

Guard Corinn Waltrip looks to lead Western Washington to a birth in the NCAA Div. II West Regional

Things are a little different in the race for this year's Great Northwest Athletic Conference basketball crown. For the first time, G-NAC basketball teams are competing in a season-ending tournament, the winner of which gets an automatic birth into the NCAA Div. II West Regional.
That doesn't mean much for the Central Washington men (16-2, 24-2) or the Western Washington women (17-1, 25-2) who have locked up regional births with stellar regular seasons. Still, the dream of running the table remains for borderline tournament teams such as the Northwest Nazarene men (10-8, 15-11), who knocked off a favored Viking men's squad 77-75 in the tournament's opening round.
Follow all the action at the G-NAC homepage. The tournament continues Wednesday with the men's final set for Friday, followed by the women's final Saturday.
